We are London’s independent transport watchdog, working to make travelling in and around the capital better for everyone
What we do
We speak up for all those who use the bus, Underground and rail services in and around the city as well as users of Dial-a-Ride, trams, taxis, cable cars and river transport, and those who walk, cycle and wheel in the city. Our remit also covers matters related to the capital’s principal road network.
We deal with about 1,000 appeals a year from people who are unhappy with the response from their transport provider to a complaint. The most common topics we deal with are about fares, retailing and refunds, as well as those related to the way transport providers have handled original complaints. Find out more in our Complaints and Appeals section.
We also campaign for improvements to the transport system. Some of our recent campaigns have focused on improving personal safety on public transport, calling for quicker bus journeys, and ensuring passengers aren’t digitally excluded when using transport in London. In 2023, we successfully argued against plans for widespread rail ticket office closures. Find out more on our Campaigns pages.
How we are funded
We are sponsored and funded by the London Assembly, which is part of the Greater London Authority, and we are independent from transport operators. The Assembly also appoints our board members.
London TravelWatch works in partnership with our sister watchdog Transport Focus, which covers issues outside the capital. Officially known as London Transport Users Committee, we were established in our current form in July 2000, although our heritage goes back to the 1947 Transport Act and beyond.
