Andy Lord from TfL addressing delegates at the personal security summitA joint summit between TfL and London TravelWatch brought together a range of organisations to discuss ways to tackle issues of personal safety and security on London’s public transport network.

The collaborative event, held in London last Friday (22 November), brought together leaders from key transport organisations, policing partners, London boroughs and the Greater London Authority, alongside community organisations.   The event provided an opportunity to come together to discuss the progress made since the release of London TravelWatch’s Personal Security report in 2022, which highlighted issues of crime and unwanted behaviour, including sexual harassment and hate crime, within the capital’s public transport system.

The event saw contributions from organisers London TravelWatch and Transport for London (TfL), alongside British Transport Police, Galop, Suzy Lamplugh Trust and the Mayor’s Office of Policing and Crime. Sharing insights and experiences, the discussions aimed to deepen the understanding of the issues at hand and explore collaborative solutions to enhance safety across the public transport network.

One of the key takeaways was that more people need to be encouraged to report hate crimes on public transport, but also that better support is needed for survivors of crime after the event, including signposting to other specialist support services.

The ideas and feedback received during the event will now be consolidated to enable London TravelWatch and TfL to continue to work together to advocate for change and champion the implementation of the recommendations outlined in the Personal Security Report.
