Tier 2 Covid Restrictions – How will they effect travel in London?

As of 12.01am on Saturday 17 October London will be placed under the Government’s new Tier 2 Covid-19 restrictions. This will mean that Londoners will be prevented from doing a number of things in an attempt to reduce the spread of the virus.
But what exactly does Tier 2 mean for those wanting to travel and what limitations will be in place? We’ve tried to break this down in a simple and clear way. We hope it helps to clear things up and give some reassurance during this difficult time.
General travel rules
- You can continue to travel but should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible
- The Government is encouraging people to walk and cycle where they can, so you should do so if you are able
- If you need to use public transport, make sure you plan ahead and avoid busy times and routes on public transport.
- You should avoid travelling with someone outside your household unless you keep socially distant
Work
- If you have the option to work from home, you should do so
- People working in essential jobs such as healthcare, including pharmacies, and education should continue to go into work where possible
- Anyone else who cannot work from home should continue to go into work
- Employers should put in place social distancing measures to ensure the workplace is as safe as possible
- There is no limit to the group size when meeting or gathering for work purposes
Going to school or university
- If you live on campus or at a property nearby you must not move back and forth between this location and your family home address during term time – subject to some limited exemptions in law
- Students commuting from their family home can continue to travel to and from school/university
- If you live on campus or a property nearby you should not host anyone outside your household or support bubble
- You should not visit another student’s property unless they in your support bubble
